@Martin: It is a “feature” of PulseAudio. In Ubuntu 9.10 there’s already a better way to get things done in PulseAudio. Perhaps it will improve further.

When pulse is running there’s no point in selecting alsa – the alsa device will be most probably taken over by pulse daemon, causing more frustration to users.

When PulseAudio is enabled in the audio settings, only that specific entry will be available; to change the settings, use the PulseAudio manager tool that is bundled with your distribution.

falls under Known Issues – frankly there should be a better way to get things done, one should be able to to select PulseAudio or Alsa from within Skype
