After 15 years Wine finally releases version 1.0

After 15 years of beta releases, the Wine (Windows on Linux) project finally releases version 1.0. Presently there are 1,241 Windows applications that install and run on Wine - these are found under the Platinum category; the other categories are;
Gold - Applications that work flawlessly with some DLL overrides or other settings, crack,
Silver - Applications that work excellently for ‘normal use’,
Bronze - Applications that work but have some issues, even for ‘normal use’,
Garbage - Applications that don’t work as intended, there should be at least one bug report if an app gets this rating. Naturally the Platinum applications are the most important
Wine, the volunteer based project will release the 1.0 version on its 15th birthday, that will be on the 6th of June, the team looks forward to have Adobe Photoshop CS and CS2 well tested, and full operational on Wine by that date.

Make client-side blogging easier with Thingamablog

Thingamablog is an open source cross-platform blogging application that helps you publish, update and maintain more than one blog at a time from the client side.
All you need to get started is, locally installed Java Runtime Environment, a Web Server, and the rpm package of Thingamablog for Linux (use alien to transform it into a .deb package in Ubuntu) – Also available are the Windows self-extracting installer, and source code.
You should be asking, what about Mysql and an Ftp client? These are not needed as Thingamablog as functions as a Ftp client when you update or publish; and being a client side blogging application is does not need Mysql.
The author of this page says the major drawback is that being a client side application, the files on the server side aren’t rewritable, so visitors can’t leave comments – a possible solution offered is using a free commenting service like HaloScan, or recoding it to permit commenting on the server side
But comments on the site say, the development team does not pays attention to bug reports, worst still the development process seems closed – strange enough for an open source project and on Linux, the wizards render it less practicable.
In other words Thingamblog has a potential and could become a good client side blogging application, but for now a lot still has to be done.

Transform Web apps into Desktop apps with the Prism extension for Firefox

Mozilla has released an updated version of prism, the stripped down web launcher. Prism is practically a naked version of Firefox, with no plugins, themes; nothing. With Prism you can launch web applications like Picassa, Facebook or Twitter and websites independently –- just like any desktop application.
Whats new;Even though the installation of Prism on Linux was simple enough — needs no installation, the Mozilla team wanted make it easier for all (Mac and Windows users included) — they came up with the rather innovative Prism extension for Firefox 3.
With this plugin you can transform any desired website or web application into a separate application.
In this operation you can put a shortcut on the desktop or pick an icon to represent the web app. Users can also create a separate profile for each web application –- this makes it possible to install a web app twice and use it simultaneously with two different user accounts.

Getting Awn dock on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

Avant Window Navigator (Awn) makes up a custom launcher that looks and acts like Mac OS X Dock.
It can be customized to soothe your taste – docking new applications can be done with a simple drag and drop; on Gutsy Gibbon it is enough to drag icons from /usr/share/applications unto the dock.
To Install on Gutsy Gibbon activate the following repositories from a terminal;
Type
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and add the following lines to the list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/reacocard-awn/ubuntu gutsy main
then update with
sudo apt-get update
Now install Awn with
sudo apt-get install
avant-window-navigator-bzr awn-core-applets-bzr awn-manager-bzr
Single-line code
Now you’ll find Awn at Applications-> Accessories-> Avant Window Navigator
For further customization go to System-> Preferences-> Awn Manager.

To load AWN at start-up in Ubuntu, go to System-> Preferences -> Sessions. Whilst in the Startup Programs panel click “Add” and put “avant-window-navigator” in the command box. Then OK.
Follow this procedure when ever you want an application to be loaded at start-up
Awn is a free to download open source package for Linux and requires Affinity (a desktop search tool) for a complete configuration.

Canonical adds commercial software into Ubuntu

Canonical Ltd, the official sponsor of Ubuntu surprises Ubuntu users and non by adding commercial software into Ubuntu via the Ubuntu Partner Repository. The Ubuntu Partner Repository (Applications -> Add/Remove -> Third Party Applications) that originally included the Opera Browser and the VMware Server now includes the Parallels Workstation.
Parallels formerly known as Swsoft is a global leader in virtualization and automation software that optimizes computing for consumers, businesses and service providers across all major hardware, operating system and virtualization platforms, says Canonical Ltd.
The Parallels Workstation for Linux is a 15 day trial version that can be transformed into a full fleshed version by buying a key through Canonical’s store.
It is difficult to find a reason that explains why Canonical decided to follow other Linux distributions likes Linspire that include commercial or proprietary software, fully knowing that such a move calls for a lot of criticism.
By the way, the Ubuntu Partner Repository in Ubuntu 8.04 already includes a full working version of the VMware Server that could be a direct competitor to Parallels Workstation but has no costs
