Firefox 3.6.6 Updates Crash Protection Feature

Newly released Firefox 3.6.6 increases the amount of time Firefox plugins are allowed to be non-responsive before being terminated. In recently released Firefox 3.6.4 (now updated to 3.6.6) non-responsive out-of-process Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plug-ins were terminated only after 10 seconds. In Firefox 3.6.6 non-responsive plug-ins are terminated after 40 seconds, so gamers and users with older, slower computers don’t suffer premature termination of out-of-process plug-ins.

Things to remember;
– The crash protection feature is not limited only to Flash, Quicktime and Silverlight plug-ins. You can run other plug-ins such as Adobe Reader or Java on separate process. More here.

– Still in about:config you can modify the default 45 seconds by editing dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to what better suits your needs. Set to -1 to completely disable the ‘crash protection’ feature.

Firefox 3.6.6 with built-in crash protection is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
